intermediate to advanced level photography course, students will learn the
history of how photography has been used since its invention to reveal an inner or
psychological world that follows an emotional logic. Lectures will cover this history
with emphasis on early allegorical photographers, surrealists, 1970s and 80s feminist photographers, and contemporary analog and digital image-makers. Through out
this course we will explore artists and the techniques they employ to convey
emotional and psychological states. Some artists that will be highlighted in the class are
Henry Peach Robinson, Dora Maar, Francesca Woodman, Emmet Gowin, Suk Kuhn Oh,
Gregory Crewdson, and David Hilliard. Students will also be required to
complete photographic assignments that include in-camera compositions, digital compositions,
and self-portraits. Each three-hour class will consist of 1/2 lecture and 1/2 lab
Students should have some knowledge of digital/film photography and Photoshop
BRING: Notebook and 5-10 images of current work/projects
INCLUDES: Lab pass to group traditional darkrooms (color and B&W), B&W Roll film processing, and computer workstations. This pass does not give access to scanners or printer workstations
